8 Reasons to Exercise That Have Nothing to do with Your Weight, Size or Shape
When it comes to exercise, the conversation almost always revolves around weight loss. This perspective majorly bums me out, because there is SO MUCH MORE to exercise than the way that your body looks. In this blog post, we are diving in 20 research-backed reasons to get moving that have absolutely nothing to do with the scale.
Improved sleep - Working out can naturally increase melatonin, balance our circadian rhythm, and enhance the amount of slow wave deep sleep we get, which can leave us feeling much more well-rested.
Less likely to get sick - There is evidence that regular exercise can actually help our immune systems work better by improving gut health, aiding in recovery from infection, and improving the function of several immune cells.
More self-confidence - Data suggests that moving our bodies regularly can completely transform our self-esteem. This is not because of weight loss, but rather because we become stronger, more flexible, and more coordinated. Exercise is a tool that allows us to believe in ourselves more and learn how to push ourselves in a healthy way. These are invaluable skills when it comes to self-worth.
Better focus - Exercise is linked to improved focus because it increases blood flow to the brain, which activates neurons and promotes cell growth in the hippocampus. This can help us to concentrate better and learn more.
Pain relief - Working out can help us feel relief from pain in a number of ways. It can block pain signals, increase endorphins, increase pain tolerance, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation.
Increased positive emotions - I think anybody who has ever exercised knows how great it feels afterwards. This is because exercise releases “feel good” chemicals such as serotonin and endorphins. Exercise can also give you a momentary break from the difficulties and stressors of daily life.
Community - Whether you are playing on a sports team, going to yoga classes with a friend, or just saying hello to the receptionist at your gym, exercise is a powerful way to meet and connect with other people.
Energy boost - It is possible for exercise to give you even more energy than caffeine. This happens through several mechanisms in the body, including the fact that exercise improves your body’s ability to produce mitochondria and allows oxygen to circulate more optimally, providing nutrients for the brain and muscles.
These are just a few of the many benefits of exercise. Notice that none of them involve changing your body AT ALL. It’s important to remember that exercise is extremely personal, and everybody has different preferences and abilities. Some people do not enjoy traditional forms of exercise, which is okay! However, it is my belief that most of us can find an approach to moving our body that will improve mental health.
