20 Things to Say to Somebody Who is Struggling with an Eating Disorder
It can be very hard to support somebody that is battling an eating disorder, and many of us get nervous about saying the wrong thing. This blog post includes 20 different ways to express your love and support for somebody dealing with an eating disorder.
You’ll notice that none of these phrases include advice or solutions. You’ll also notice that none of these phrases include any commentary about the person’s body or appearance- that’s because these things tend to be unhelpful when it comes to eating disorder recovery.
Keep in mind, everybody is different… so a phrase that might be extremely comforting and supportive to one person, might rub another person the wrong way. Use discretion and be authentic!
I’m so sorry.
This isn’t fair.
I know this is difficult, but I am here for you.
I believe in you.
I’ll eat lunch with you if you’d like.
Let’s hang out.
I know I might not understand what you’re going through, but I am always available to talk if you need it.
Would you like me to help you research therapists and dietitians?
I love you - with and without your eating disorder.
You are hilarious! [or kind or smart or fun to be around] - Focusing on compliments not related to appearance or health.
What can I do to support you?
I am thinking of you.
I am so proud of you.
Would it be helpful if I came grocery shopping with you?
I know that you can get through this.
This is SO hard.
Would you like to cook or bake something together? I understand if you’re not ready for that.
I can go to your appointment with you if you would like.
Do you feel like talking about it?
Are there any warning signs or triggers you can tell me about?
Supporting somebody with an eating disorder is incredibly complex. Make sure that you are taking care of yourself throughout the process too. What matters most is showing up.
