How to Manage Election Day Anxiety

I don’t know about you, but election anxiety—and political anxiety in general—has been weighing heavy on my heart recently. If you feel it too, you are certainly not alone. A lot of us are feeling helpless, fearful, and stressed as we are barraged with headlines and news articles, anticipate results, and confront the potential for conflict to arise. Here are some strategies to help you manage your anxiety and find calm during this critical day:

1. Consider Your Relationship with the Media

Please do not misconstrue this—it is very important to stay informed and open our eyes to the injustice in this world. That said, consider limiting your media consumption on Election Day. Designate specific times to check updates and avoid incessant scrolling on social media, which can amplify stress and uncertainty unnecessarily.

2. Practice Mindfulness

Incorporate mindfulness techniques to stay grounded. I know it’s so cliche, but it’s real! Simple practices like deep breathing, meditation, or taking a short walk can truly help you manage anxiety and keep you centered throughout the day. Spending time outside has specifically been shown to increase hopefulness and combat dread. If you know me you know I am a proponent of touching grass. :)

3. Connect with Community

Reach out to friends or family members who share your concerns. Discussing your feelings can help alleviate anxiety. Consider organizing a small gathering to share your thoughts and support each other as the day unfolds. The reminder that we are in community, and not alone, can be very healing.

4. Take Action

Channel anxiety, anger, and feelings of helplessness into positive action. This could mean participating in mutual aid, donating time and/or money, spreading awareness, contacting representatives, and engaging in local activism. Taking steps to care for others is not only empowering, I also believe it is our obligation!

5. Seek Professional Help if Needed

If your anxiety becomes overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional. It is not silly or unreasonable to feel deeply impacted by the political climate of our world—it’s the natural response. Therapists can help you sort out your own emotions and provide you with tailored strategies for navigating this kind of pain.

Election Day can evoke strong emotions, but feeling anxious or depressed about global politics can happen at any time. If you need extra support, please reach out to eada@morningbirdtherapy.com!
